BabySitting Black Bear

I can’t help but wonder, thinking of baby sitting there like a child watching her mother, if next year her Mom is going to ask me to baby sit!

Given the timing on this I think that this Momma was the bear that attacked me the year before last. Thus, it was a she, and not a he, after all.

I met the little one again just a few days ago, up on the little knoll where I work. I was standing up to go inside and was only half way up, halfway bent over and heard a noise and looked over my right shoulder, and their he was, about 7 feet away, stopped and looking at me, and then looking cautiously around and obviously wondering, as was I, What do we do now? He made the first move away, slowly turning his head, first to his left then to the right and this time the rest of his body followed as he made his way slowly down into the woods before he started running.
He has grown, although he was not such a tiny guy last year. Just a wee bit smaller now than his mama when she ran past and then at, me.
He is a black coloured bear, with a tan snout. Very very beautiful.
So, I am wondering, “where is your mama or, am I babysitting”?
I do not think she has been here to teach him about us being here because it is very unusual for them to wander down into the yard like this. Gary said that he was in the front yard just two days ago. I think he is learning the path though. It is right up above the little hill where you saw me, down a distance and more in the woods, or, most usual, up by the second road just up the driveway..... Right up there , ok? You will be safer that way, and we will be able to see your droppings to know that you are alright. Ok?

Sept. 29 2012 Fri.

The little guy is lost. He wandered into my front yard tonight, while I was sitting here in my usual spot on the front porch. I stood slowly up as our gazes met and he turned and started to run but then, just slowed down really fast and walked away as I told him he has got to find another route through the woods. Poor little guy...I think that he was embarrassed to be seen running away this time.

Now, in case my casualness leads you to think that my caution has gone to the wind, I assure you it has not. I will have to call and talk to the Wild Life people as to what to do because I know that  it is not safe for a bear to get too used to people.
However, this is going to be a bit of a difficult thing for me...
I'm babysitting, remember?

oh, mama mia, how does one call the ranger to come and pick up her kids?  There is however another bear up there as well, bigger. I can tell by the noise, and this one seems to know where the path is. I do not think it is the mother because they do not stay together, and they go home at different times. The Little Bear was here tonight about 11:00 or so....earlier than they usually pass by.  Yes, I will need to talk to somebody about this one.
I'm thinking that it is time to start singing out here again.  Let him, or her know my voice, and hopefully help give him a sense of the distance between us.

2013
I never did call the rangers and baby bear seems to have learned its path through the woods down the road.
